2008 St Clement Merlot Napa Valley

This Merlot opens with aromas of fresh cranberry, black pepper and rosehips. The palate reveals bright flavors of strawberry and pomegranate with underlying clove and other subtle brown spices. Fresh and fruity, this is an incredibly approachable wine.

The majority of this Merlot is grown in a vineyard close to the city of Napa called Big Ranch and from our favorite block of Abbott’s Vineyard in Carneros. The Merlot from these two vineyards experiences cooling fogs from the bay which ensure long even ripening and balanced acidity. The 2008 vintage features some new vineyard sources as well. Frost during the 2008 growing season resulted in valley floor fruit harvested with low yields and small berries. This preserved a youthful, fresh character in the finished wine that is immediately apparent in its soft texture and rounded tannins.

This Merlot opens with aromas of fresh cranberry, black pepper and rosehips. The palate reveals bright flavors of strawberry and pomegranate with underlying clove and other subtle brown  spices. Fresh and fruity, this is an incredibly approachable wine. The grapes for this Merlot were fermented in a combination of open and closed top fermenters to maximize concentration and extraction in the final blend. Each lot was aged separately in 100 percent French oak (40 percent new) for 19 months before blending and bottling.
