The 2009 Oroppas is rich and refined, opening with classic aromas of dark cherry and cassis that lead to subtle, savory notes of thyme and sage, and sweet brown spices. The palate displays distinct flavors of black cherry, cedar and mocha, which are enhanced by refined tannins. This vintage showcases the signature style of Oroppas with generous fruit flavors, balanced acidity and an elegant finish.
Picked over a one month period as each vineyard block ripened, the grapes were brought to the winery in small lots, fermented dry, and placed in small French oak barrels (59% new). Each varietal and vineyard lot was aged separately for nineteen months until the final wine was blended just before bottling. During barrel ageing, the wine was racked twice. Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot were blended in with the Cabernet Sauvignon to enhance the structure and mid-palate weight, while the addition of Merlot added a bright red fruit component.
Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards on Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Mount Veeder contributed to the 2009 Oroppas blend, along with valley floor fruit from Rutherford, Oak Knoll and St. Helena. Using fruit from this varied group of vineyards is one of the signatures of Oroppas. Each vineyard brings its own individual qualities to the blend, whether in aroma, structure or depth, and by blending them all together we are left with a wine that is rich and sophisticated.
